I'm about to leave Tanzania. Inland, the people have
been friendlier and more honest, and the food has improved. I'm
going to miss TZ, especially the kids. They have an amazing talent
to run beside my bicycle with synchronized steps. They often greet
me with, "Uncle," or, "Shikamo," which means,
"I place your feet on my head." It is a sign of respect
for elders and I am supposed to reply in a grumbly voice, "Mara
haba (Please stand)." My kitchen swahili has expanded to a
few hundred words, even the people say I speak swahili well, but
all I can understand are things like, "Chips and eggs 500,
foriegner 1000." Malawi will be difficult, not knowing anything.
I've met loads of people traveling from Cario (or
London) to Capetown. Many are traveling for charities, like: anti-slavery
international, skin cancer foundation, and heaps of charities for
children. Many people often ask me what my charity is and I say,
"I'm the charity case." They are surprised, as if I am
selfish. I am challenged enough to bicycle and write my book. I
hope someday this will make a difference.
In the meantime, I'm thinking of trying to milk a
few dollars out of people so I have started my own charity: Children
Slaves with Cancer Against Global Warming (CSWCAGW). If you'd like
to make a donation to this worthy cause please contact me. One-hundred
percent of funds not spent on beer will go to these needy children.
Please do it for our children's future.
May your boat always float on top of the water.
