I am still in the library. I returned to the caravan park, in the rain, to
pay another 14 A.D. to sleep under the shelter on the cement next to the barbecue.
Of course, now the weather is perfect aside from the wind.
The following comes from Patrick Martino. Pat has traveled New Zealand and
South East Asia for a year, mostly by bicycle, and is in Taiwan studying Mandarin.
I was surprised to see this. It's a small world! The Good Guy of the Week Award
The Good Guy of the Week Award goess to Scott Stoll. I met Scott while zooming
up a steep mountain in the remote North West of Vietnam. He was struggling in
the heat to climb the monster before him. He was wearing a bright orange Dutch
soccer jersey, the better for vechiles to see him. [It also serves as a useful
disguise -- Scott] I, at first, thought he was Dutch. Was I shocked to discover
he was an American but it gets better not just an an American but he was from
Wisconsin and no wait better still from my home town of Waukesha. What are the
chances. He was on the final leg of a two year long trip around the world on his
bicycle. He was tackling the moutain without a front derailer because a Vietnamese
motodriver was playing games with him and had crashed into him breaking the device.
[Ripped it clear off my bike along with two panniers. I won considering he ended
up in the hospital with his two stooges -- Scott] He thus could not change gears
without first getting off of his bike and changing the chain by hand. [Sometimes
I used my foot while riding.] Tough kid. I later heard in an email from him he
made the complete circuit. I would have done the same thing if my bike hadn't
gotten stolen. [Patrick had his Marin mountain bike stolen in Ho Chi Min City
(Saigon) while he was surfing the internet even though it was chained to a tree.
We met when he passed me on a motor scooter with his bicycle panniers strapped
to the back.] He gets The Good Guy of the Week Award.
Thanks, Patrick.
