Cooper Pedy -- Opal mining capitol of the world
Date: October 21, 2003

Location: Coober Pedy, South Australia

I'm still alive! I've had a few adventures that I'd like to write about but can't because the internet costs a lot here. I will write more when the cost is reasonable.

I have visited Ayer's Rock, now known as Uluru. It was beautiful. The red center of Australia from Alice Springs to Uluru is great. There are many places to hike and bike.

Currently, I am in the a city that is built upon the world's largest opal deposits. The temperature can exceed 50 degrees centigrade. Many buildings are built underground with a constant temperature of 25 degrees. I'm in an underground internet cafe. Above ground it looks like nothing but dust and vents and mullock from the mines and a lot of sheet metal buildings. A whirly just blew past on my way sucking the dust off the ground with a noise like a vacuum cleaner.

I'm off to Adelaide. I will have a 250 kilometer stretch with no cities or roadhouses, nothing but a barren desert, the same one in the Mad Max movies.
